Editor's Note: Today I am wearing a Vince top, sweater by Peter Nygard, J.Crew cropped pants with J.Crew kitten heels.
My daughter is sending out her first application for a job today, and it made me reminisce about spring of my senior year in college. I know for all the 2016 graduates the springtime is a scary time. I was determined to work in New York and was not going to take no for an answer. My daughter Riley is on my same path as I was. A southern wanting to work in New York is much harder than someone from the Northeast. If you are as determined as I was and as Riley is you can do it! I spend my early part of spring 1982, researching and finding connection for interviews. Then I spend 10 days of my spring break and part of a school week in New York City interviewing. I got 4 job interviews and Bloomingdales and Macy's are the only ones I truly remember. I was applying for an assistant buying position. The process was scary but I left New York City with one job offer on the spot from Macy. Bloomingdales telex me that Monday morning with a job offer (I don't even know if telex still exist!) My year in New York City was my best graduate school program that I could have ever done. My first week at Bloomingdales in August 1982, all the new hires sat in a large auditorium and the speaker told us to look at the front, side, and back of the auditorium. She then proceeded to tell us that only one of us would be remaining after 3 months. I thought to myself it sure as hell is going to be me! I lived in New York for one year and then transferred to Dallas to be a department manager for Bloomingdales. Believe it or not my training at Bloomingdales in the management office prepared me to own my own business. It was truly the right way to start my career. I was skinny, poor, and tired but would never trade that experience for anything else in the world. For all the 2016 graduates out there looking for a job, best of luck, believe in yourself, and go for it!
Riley interned for a great company last summer in NYC. She is determined to end up in New York this fall.
I am sure it will be a great experience for her living in New York as it was for me!
Last night for dinner I had leftover tenderloin and a salad with spicy nuts. Delicious!
Every time I hear this song, I think about the fact that I own my own business and how it in powers me!
